About Old City
Located within the most historic square mile of this country, Old City was once a busy commercial
waterfront district. By the early 1970s, many of its industrial and warehouse uses gave way to artists' lofts and a thriving arts community took root. This was followed in the 1980s by the restoration and conversion of many historic industrial structures into large residential apartments.
The late 1980s and early 90s saw an influx of art galleries,
design firms, architects and performance groups to Old City. The community grew to include restaurants, theatre companies, galleries for contemporary and traditional fine and decorative
art, artists' cooperatives, art workshops, schools, dance companies, contemporary design showrooms, ethnographic art galleries, historic and cultural museums - as well as nearly 40 architectural and graphic design firms.
Today, Old City is an active cultural, dining and shopping district every day of the month and one of the most appealing
residential districts in downtown Philadelphia. Theatre, dance and music programs are scheduled here throughout the year.
The Old City Arts Association is a volunteer organization supported by its members and
sponsors, dedicated to developing Old City as a vital meeting place for arts and culture in Philadelphia. The Old City Cultural District is an easy walk from the new Pennsylvania
Convention Center & downtown hotels (about 10 minutes). The District is small enough to be seen during a brief walking tour but interesting enough to spend an entire day exploring all its
many cultural and architectural gems.
